We are all born to sing — I believe this with all my heart. People all over the world have sung for as long as there has been language – in fact only relatively recently, with the advent of musical recording, has the birthright of song been relinquished to the professionals.
Do you have a story? Perhaps there’s a reason why you’re afraid to sing. Many people who think they can’t sing have had some kind of experience that shut them down (for example, a criticism at an early age, a sense that someone else was the “the singer” in the family, an insensitive music teacher!) and this negative experience has gelled into a myth that they have come to see as a truth. Does this sound familiar to you?
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
We’ll start by opening up our idea of what singing is. Let’s play with sound, and what it’s like to simply make noise together. Let’s talk about what singing means to you and why, and what kind of music interests you. We’ll play games with singing and rhythm, do some toning and rounds as a way of exploring harmony, move and stretch our bodies as we explore making different sounds, and sing simple, accessible songs from different cultures. Finding your voice is both fun and profound!

Fear of Cooking
FEAR OF COOKING... Everyone has a fear of something! I probably inherited mine from my mother who raised me on New York City take-out. Even though I’ve done plenty of it in my life, I always have to get over a hump before I start cooking. It feels weirdly high stakes to me and every part tends to feel like a barrier. Figuring out what to cook, which includes: how to balance taste, nutrition, and calories; considering who I’m cooking for and what will please them; understanding the ingredients and figuring out if I have them or not. How I named my business.
Here’s a thing… When I first started teaching singing, I called my workshops “Finding Your Voice: Learn to Sing Even if You Think You Can’t Carry a Tune.” I thought that pretty much said it all — take my workshop and discover your voice. Learn to work with it; learn to love it; learn new skills. All good! Well, once they made it to the workshop, they loved it; they became enlightened! But where were all the people I kept meeting everywhere who told me that they couldn’t sing but wished they could? Why weren’t they showing up in droves?
